John Ball is a consultant metrologist to US Army calibration and test equipment development programs, Since 2004 he has also been a senior assessor for A2LA and has conducted many calibration laboratory assessments. John is the former director of the Army Primary Standards Laboratory (APSL) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, where he managed over a hundred technical personnel working in virtually every measurement area until he retired from the government in 2004. Mr. Ball spent most his 30-year government career working in Army calibration and testing laboratories - mobile vans, field support teams, regional calibration centers, and the primary laboratory While he was director, the Army primary laboratory become the first government cal lab accredited across the board to ISO Guide 25/ISO 17025 and the APSL also earned ISO 9000 registration. John has also worked outside the government as a petrochemical process control/instrumentation engineer and in electrical equipment manufacturing. During his time with the government, Mr. Ball was chairman of the DOD Joint Service Calibration Coordination Group and the Army member on both the Joint Service Electrical Standards and Physical Standards Working Groups for many years. He is past chairman of the NCSLI Intrinsic and Derived Standards Committee and remains an active NCSLI member. Publications include (as editor) two NCSL Recommended Practices (Josephson Voltage Standards and Two-pressure/Two Temperature Humidity) and a March 2008 paper in NCSLI Measure on pressure transducers. He served until recently on the National Research Council Assessment Panel which conducts periodic on-site assessments of NIST. John has a BS in Physics from Arkansas State University, MS in Physics from Georgia Tech, and is a program management graduate of the Defense Systems Management College.

 

Dawn Mettler is quality systems assessor and technical consultant for biological, chemical, pharmaceutical, environmental and biodefense/select agent laboratories. She has over twenty years experience in performing microbiological and analytical processes, including pathology, bacterial culture, analytical chemistry, serology, fluorescent antibody testing and tissue culture. She has over twenty-five years experience in veterinary diagnostics and processes, including cell line maintenance, virus isolation, serology, & histology; and 10 years experience in the biodefense arena.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University. She has held positions of Quality Assurance Manager, Operations Manager, Chemical Safety Officer, Laboratory Specialist and Special Projects Manager for large food testing laboratories and R & D facilitie. Ms. Mettler has performed over 200 assessments using ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 9001, Guide 34/35 and Guide 43 Standards. She is an experienced trainer and has developed customized microbiological, chemical, & quality system courses using these Standards.


Ken Stoub is a Senior Consultant and conducts laboratory quality system training and assessments in the environmental, food, chemical, pharmaceutical, GLP, and animal drug testing areas. He holds a B.S. Chemistry degree from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI. He has previously held the position of Laboratory Director and General Manager for the IT Corporation Environmental Laboratory in Santa Ana, CA; managed a staff of 68. Additionally, he was Senior Director and Vice President of the Waste Management Environmental Monitoring Laboratory in Chicago, IL; managed a staff of 120. Also held position of Director and Vice President of Shankman Laboratories, and was owner and President of AgriScience Laboratories. Mr. Stoub has conducted over 200 assessments using ISO/IEC 17025, ISO/IEC Guide 25, GLP, and ISO 9001 quality standards, and also has conducted over 50 training courses in the same areas. Mr. Stoub is experienced in the development and use of qualitative and quantitative methods for organic and inorganic compounds and has specific expertise in wet chemistry, chromatographic (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, IC), spectroscopic (AA, Graphite Furnace AA, ICP, ICP/MS, CVAA, UV/Visible), microscopy, and radiological testing areas.


Kenneth Sloneker is a consulting engineer working as the Lab Director for Electronic Development Laboratories. EDL is a registered medical device manufacturer. He is also the President of SRG Inc, an onsite consultation service and ASL US who provides high level support and service for ASL AC temperature bridges used in most primary temperature labs throughout the world. Mr. Sloneker began his career as an engineering assistant working on the development of Teflon Seals. He subsequently completed an apprenticeship in Mold Making and founded Centerline Tool in New York. Ken attended the New York Institute of Technology and received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Sciences) from Kennedy Western University. Ken has worked for over 20 years designing and manufacturing thermocouples for a wide array of industries. He currently serves as the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) E20.04 Thermocouple Thermometry Chairman. ASTM works to develop and maintain voluntary consensus standards for industry. He has published numerous papers related to temperature measurement for NCSLI, TEMPMEKO, Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) and the Temperature Symposium.


Dan Tholen is a consultant and educator in statistical methods for laboratory measurements. Principal clients include providers of quality control materials and proficiency testing programs, professional associations, and accrediting bodies throughout the world. Dan has participated in writing numerous national and international standards for ISO, ASTM, AOAC, and CLSI. He works part-time as a Technical Expert for the US Centers for Disease Control, Division of Laboratory Systems. Dan is a Technical Consultant for A2LA and a Lead Assessor for the Proficiency Testing and Reference Materials programs. He is the current Chairman of the APLAC Proficiency Testing Committee and is the ILAC Liaison to ISO TC 69 on Application of Statistical Methods. Dan earned a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan a long time ago, and resides in Traverse City, Michigan.


Dr. Richard Turner and Barbara Turner - Richard Turner has a D. Phil in Physics from Oxford University and was head of the National Metrology Laboratory of South Africa from 1970 to 1993. During that time he also initiated, established and managed the South African National Calibration Service (NCS) and was its CEO from 1993 to 1996. He developed a system for estimating uncertainties for the NCS which was consistent with the international accepted methods which appeared later. The NCS has mutual recognition agreements with Europe and Taiwan. He is an A2LA assessor. Barbara Turner has an honors degree in mathematics and statistics from the Universityof London and an M Sc (Survey) in Remote Sensing from the Universityof Natal. She has considerable experience in teaching and training at all levels including high school and university.


Daren Valentine is the Communications Manager for A2LA. He has been with A2LA since 1992, and has been teaching classes on accreditation since 1994. Mr Valentine oversees the operation of A2LA's training programs as well as all aspects of A2LA's IT infrastructure. Prior to joing A2LA, Mr. Valentine was the manager of laoratory operations for the Genetic Toxicology division of Hazleton-Washington.

Lisa M. Walters, Ph.D. is the Principal Officer of Healthy Solutions Quality Consulting, LLC (www.healthysolutionsqc.com). She is a certified medical technologist with a Specialty in Blood Banking from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She is also a qualified assessor for the AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks) and has successfully completed training as an assessor for ISO 15189 as part of the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA). As part of A2LA, she serves on Medical and Technical Advisory Board, has developed draft guidelines on Uncertainty in Measurement for diagnostic laboratory testing, and provided training to the assessor corp. She has assisted organizations achieve API product certification, ISO registration, as well as FDA and AABB compliance. She earned an MBA from St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Management from the California Coast University in Santa Ana, California. Her doctoral research was published as part of the ASQ Quality Press, and she additionally has published Quality-related reference books as part of the AABB Press. She is a consistently invited to speak at local, regional and national conferences. She currently serves as Visiting Professor of Business Administration at the State University of New York at Fredonia as well as consultant faculty for the Penn State University Continuing Education Department. Dr. Walters is also Six Sigma Green Belt.
