Introduction to Method Validation for Chemistry and Microbiology Laboratories (EMU 400)

Participants will learn the process of method validation, understand conceptual differences between method validation and method verification, and understand how measurement uncertainty and target measurement uncertainty can affect acceptability of a validation. In-depth discussion about the elements of how to appropriately validate a method with respect to method type will provide participants with template for method validation process and report.

Prerequisites

  1. (EMU 200) Intermediate Statistics
  2. (EMU 201 or EMU 202) Applied Measurement Uncertainty
  3. (EMU 250) Implementation of QA/QC Program and Risk Management Strategies Using Control Charts [Suggested]
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet use

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

The participant will need to bring a laptop computer (PC or MAC) with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet installed. Please note that the tablet and smart phone versions of Excel and other spreadsheets do not have the full functionality of the PC versions and the participant may not be able to utilize all the power of the spreadsheet covered during the training.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the process of method validation from various Life Sciences perspectives
  2. Describe the concepts and differences between method verification and method validation
  3. Define terms such as accuracy, precision, specificity, ruggedness, detection limits, etc.
  4. Given methods, determine LOD, LOQ, MU, Target Measurement Uncertainty, validation acceptance criteria
  5. From memory, outline the steps for validating a method
  6. Using a validation template, choose a method type and determine values for various parameters of a method validation
