Farewell to Daren Valentine
A2LA Today l September 2016 l Number 132
By Diana Elias, A2LA Director of HR
In August, we bid farewell to Daren Valentine, A2LA Director of IT, as he transitions to retired life.
Daren spent over 24 years with A2LA and is responsible for establishing the IT infrastructure that we have in place today. The A2LA database that staff uses to manage the accreditation process, the A2LA website and accredited organization search feature, and the email system were among the most influential and important projects that Daren implemented from the ground up with a shoestring budget and sheer determination. In addition to his work with IT, Daren was also key in the development of A2LA’s public training department, having authored and taught many courses, including ISO Guide 25 (now ISO/IEC 17025) and the Internal Auditing course.
Although Daren is no longer working for A2LA as an employee, he continues to offer guidance on the new accreditation process management system that is being rolled out, and he has also dusted off his course instructor hat. Aside from his continued commitment and work with A2LA, Daren plans on playing lots of golf, picking up fly fishing once again (including making his own lures) and traveling the country with his wife, Johnetta, in his custom fifth wheel.
When asked what advice he would have for prospective A2LA assessors and new staff, Daren replied: “Several things come to mind:
- Patience and perseverance – very few good things happen quickly.
- Find your niche – know your strengths, and manage your career to take advantage of those strengths.
- Strengthen your weaknesses – learn new things, keep growing.”
Although Daren is no longer present at A2LA on a day-to-day basis, his legacy lives on. We wish him all the best and look forward to the continued relationship that we will have with him.Print
